Making the Darkness Conscious:

Embracing the Shadow as a Gateway to Wisdom & Power

As a little girl, at bedtime, when the lights went out, I would pull the covers up to my chin, terrified of the red-horned monsters or the vampires I was certain were lurking in the shadows or underneath my bed. When I couldn’t stand the fear a second longer, I’d leap out of bed, my feet pounding the ground like thunder, and run to turn on the light as fast as I could.

Recently, I took a solo trip to Desert Hot Springs, right by the iconic wind farm just off the 10 Freeway as you head toward Palm Springs. Unbeknownst to me, I was the only guest on the property. During the day, it was a total luxury to soak in the tubs and pools alone, but at night, it was a different story.

The first night there, I lay in bed as the wind howled, rattling the windows so fiercely I thought the glass might shatter. I could feel the scared little girl inside of me trembling, certain the monsters would emerge at any moment.

But instead of running from the fear, I chose to stay with it. I slowed my breath, softened my body, and unclenched my fists. As my nervous system began to settle, I felt something shift. A presence. A whisper from the darkness itself:

“I am wild, primal, ancient life force energy.  I am unbridled.  Feel how powerful I am. Breathe me in.”

Awestruck, goosebumps prickled up and down my arms. My breathing deepened, my body relaxed, and I felt a sense of fearlessness and wholeness throughout my being.

In my sixteen years of psycho-spiritual coaching and healing work—both personally and professionally—I’ve seen again and again that true transformation doesn’t come from resisting our shadows. It comes from giving them space, a voice, a chance to be seen.

Even the word demon comes from the Greek daemon—a guiding spirit, a muse, an unlikely teacher. I love this notion: that the figures in the dark are not here to terrify us but to teach us. To lead us deeper into our own wisdom. Swiss Psychiatrist & Psychotherapist Jung stated,

“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”

When we make the dark conscious, we awaken. We develop the courage to meet life fully, to love more deeply, to live more fully.

Inspired by my time at Desert Hot Springs, I longed for a meditation practice where I could be held by this Wild Primal Life Force energy I call the Sacred Darkness. I couldn’t find a meditation online, and then I heard her whisper:

“Create one.”

So, I did. 🙂

I invite you to share in this guided practice with me. In honor of the Lunar New Year, for the next week, use the discount code NEWYEAR to join. For the next 40 days, 50% of all proceeds will be donated to the LA Wildfire Relief Fund, offering support to a place so close to my heart.

Plunge into the Sacred Darkness. See what wisdom and magic awaits you.
